Club Letter No. 8

The Fallen Veil Digital Cover Has Arrived

TODAY’S ISSUE

Greetings all. We hope you’ve had a lovely week, and here’s to the weekend being even better. We’re happy to be back in your inbox with some book discussions, original stories, thoughts on productivity culture and third places, and as always, some notes that we hope inspire you intellectually and creatively.

Additionally, our website got a makeover, and she’s lookin’ ready to take on the world. This is where you can visit our galleries, get a direct link to recent blog/essay posts, contact us for collaborations or hire, and check out whatever we’re cooking up in the Ozuree kitchen (figuratively). Why bury the lead? We have our first-ever digital cover, the first of many, featuring our latest sandy shoot, another piece added to the Desertland content series. Check it out below and then visit Claudia’s story behind the shots.

WEEKEND BEHAVIOR

There’s always spring cleaning if that’s your thing. Otherwise…

READING: Per usual, we highly recommend popping into the Book Pub to see what Madi is up to this week. It’s always something good.

Want something new? Here’s a list of books hitting the shelves this month:

MOVIES/SHOWS:

Coming Up: Don’t mind me, while I’m not so patiently waiting for the release of Bridgerton Season 3… Did you see the trailer? Call it basic, but Bridgerton has the secret sauce to making truly bingeable and engaging seasons and I’m hooked. The books, on the other hand? Not so much, but I appreciate the source material.

New: According to the description…  “Under the Bridge” is based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year old Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Through the eyes of Godfrey (Riley Keough) and a local police officer (Lily Gladstone), the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder — revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer.

Say less, I’ll be watching.

ACTIVITIES:

Gardening.

If you’re a regular pro, you can disregard this. For those of us who want to get more involved with our garden’s this spring, here’s a checklist to make sure we’re on track.

Find or visit a third place.

Third places facilitate social interaction, and they seem to be on the decline, despite younger generations’ hunger for in-person interactions that take them offline for a while. This is a good challenge to either see what’s out there in your community or perhaps start something yourself!

It seems obvious, but sometimes we forget how nice it can be to do the simple, slow things. Visit a park, take in a show, cook a new recipe, go on a walk with your pup, take a trip to the mall just to people-watch, call a friend or family member just to chat, or sit by the window and read a good book until you pass out. At times, productivity culture keeps us from doing the things that feed our bodies and soul in the best ways.

RANDOM: Did you see this weird interaction between a reporter and Caitlin Clark at her first WNBA press conference? More women in journalism! Nothing further, your honor. Note: He did apologize, but it’s still weird.

Did you miss the best moments from the WNBA draft? Go for the basketball, stay for the outfits.

BITS OF ADVICE FROM WOMEN

“Remember that life is a marathon - not a sprint.
To ask for forgiveness, rather than permission.
To understand that any border is most often malleable.
— and to love hard, or get out.”

Stanislava Pinchuk - multi-disciplinary artist

LYRIC SPOTLIGHT

"Did you see the frightened ones? Did you hear the falling bombs? Did you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter when the promise of a brave new world unfurled beneath a clear blue sky?"

—Pink Floyd, "Goodbye Blue Sky"

ART

We are honoring Faith Ringgold, a pioneering painter, sculptor, weaver, performer, writer and social justice activist. Her work and legacy are prime examples of the personal and the political being tightly bound through art. A blueprint that many after her have followed in their own artistic journeys.

CLUB SOUNDTRACK NO. 7:

FROM THE ARCHIVES: GETTING TO KNOW US

Whether you know us well or don’t know us from Adam, we want to share bits of our story along the way that allow you to see behind the curtain (Oz references, always) of who we are and why we do what we do. In that spirit, here’s a little video we made when we first decided to start a website and see where it took us. I (Crosslyn) had also just gotten a new camera and was beyond excited to use it. Each time still feels like the first time. :’)

If you are reading this, we want to thank you for subscribing and hope that you will refer a friend and help us grow the club. See you next week!
